The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most original aircraft in terms of design and aerodynamic layout of the Second World War. It was a revolutionary heavy fighter for its twin-spar fuselage, in which the two engines were installed, with the pilot placed in a forward cockpit in the center of the aircraft. Thanks to its two liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 12-cylinder V engines of 1425 HP each, the P-38 reached a maximum speed of over 660 km/h. It was armed with four 12.7 mm Browning machine guns and a Hispano M2 cannon that guaranteed good firepower. They were not very maneuverable compared to single-engine fighters of the time but very robust and stable. Its strong point was its high flight autonomy, very useful in the Pacific theater of operations or escort missions for long-range bombers over European skies. The P-38, due to its characteristic shape and fearsome operational characteristics, was nicknamed “the two-tailed devil” by enemy pilots.
