Studies on the DC 6 were started during World War Two, to meet the US Air Force’s demands for long-range military cargo planes. It was converted for civilian transport immediately after the war and equipped with a pressurized cabin and the means to carry 52 to 68 passengers. United Airlines was the first company to receive the DC 6, in April 1947. It was a DC 6B, flown by S.A.S., which made the first transpolar flight from Los Angeles to Copenhagen in 1952.
288 DC 6B’s were built until production stopped in 1958.
