The Northrop F-5 was born in the 60s to meet the needs of many NATO countries that required a simple, cheap, and easy-to-maintain multi-role fighter. From its original airframe, the F-5E Tiger II was born in the early 1970s. Equipped with a pair of new J85-GE-21 engines capable of guaranteeing much higher power and thrust than the previous version, it was characterized by an elongated and enlarged fuselage. The improved flight performance achieved with the new aerodynamic layout, the increased operational range, and the updated avionics, have allowed the Tiger II to be used successfully by numerous air forces. The basic armament consists of two 20mm cannons, installed in the nose under the cabin, and the possibility of using various combinations of air-to-air missiles. In addition to the primary fighter role, however, it still maintained extensive ground attack capabilities.
